I read this after binge-watching the show after a bad flare up because of my chronic pain.
Surprisingly, aside from 2010s book problems, this was a lot better than the show, and a few of the things that didn’t make sense to me (like the loft scene with Alex when it matched Cole’s personality more) were better.
My favorite character show-wise was Isaac, and he is also the most attractive out of the boys. Book-wise he was also the one who entertaining me the most with his lines, despite his personality not being the best - he might be objectively the worst out of all the older boys.
Oh, and the one thing I think the show got better than the book: Danny. He felt a lot more in the show than in the book.
This book was always about the main girl and Cole, while the show made a mess by confusingly making the girl hop between Alex and Cole in an almost half and half measure.
I saw someone else saying that show Cole and Alex seem serial killers and I wholeheartedly agree… they’re intensely weird? In the book we can see that our girl and Cole bond over both understanding loss (despite being completely different losses) and both kind of come alive during the story, leaving behind the shells they were hiding behind. And Alex 100% liked her only because she was a thing to pull over his brother and ex-girlfriend, they had a quite nice friendship dynamic from the start, even tho she had the closest bond with Nathan, which the show really didn’t do justice, despite giving Nathan more of a story. Show wise? I never understood what Alex liked in her, being obsessed with her right from the start for no reason than what… her being new? In the book he’s not always around in the scenes in which he felt pushy in the show, and that was a lot more flattering of a look.
I had fun reading and watching tho, and I hope it gets a new season, just like I hope this book turns into a series.

okay so i really thought this book was a standalone, but the story is unfinished?!! dude. other than that, i really loved how jackie grew to adjust into her new life in colorado. the new relationships she built with the boys was adorable to witness. i love found family tropes ): but like theres so much potential for a sequel!!! i can't believe it's not finished. it was entertaining to read, but there were a handful of times i did cringe. i'm excited to watch the show tho

Okay, so I wasn't expecting the book to be so drastically different than the show. I really enjoyed both for what they are, though. I just got to look at it like it was an alternate universe version of what I've already known! Which was fantastic, and I really enjoyed watching the inner thoughts of Jackie through everything that you obviously don't get in TV. Really cute book!
