Mama will wall me to the bus stop and leave me there and we will not speak of what the freeway does to us when it is nighttime and we are ghosts. But Mama taught me how to swim and I can see underwater. I can see.

Read for book club.

I like to walk into books not knowing much about it. The description on the back of the book told just enough to keep a mystery about what was ahead.

The book was disturbing, and that is because of how realistic it was. The vivid sensations and how Kiara was dealing with the many conflicts and situations she was in.

I can’t really describe more as I want this review to more inspire you to pick this book up and think about it for yourself.

Lelia Mottley hit it out of the park with her debut. I will be looking out for her next work. Mottley has a way with words. The language the character uses is woven with metaphor and simile that still makes sense for her.

If you are someone who is triggered by sexual violence, police abuse, and suicide attempts, tread carefully or avoid. If you’re able to work your way through it, it is worth it.

A poignant novel. Truly a challenging read that was so well written and so harrowing.

Harrowing! Child turns to sex work to pay bills thanks to deadbeat family. Horrifyingly inspired by true events. NB ACAB! 3🚔

Very dark but very good. Took me a second to get into it because it turned sad immediately after starting, and I wasn’t sure whether that was something I was looking for in my reading right now. I’m glad I stuck it through, because the ending was beautiful in the way it focused on Kiara’s relationships with her loved ones persevering in the worst of circumstances. Kiara is such a strong character, and it was so hard reading about everything that happens to her throughout the book. The author’s note was also really important to my final thoughts on the book. Looking forward to discussing this as part of the @verynicebooks book club!

This story doesnt have a neatly wrapped up hapoy ending that promises that the bad guys go to jail and the good guys get to heal.  It’s a realistic depiction of marginalized lives that fall outside the purview of American justice, yet it shows that even amongst the despair and pain, there are moments of love and joy that matter, even if they dont triumph over injustice.
