I listened to Boy Friends on audio book and I think it was the perfect choice for Michael Pederson's very chatty, stream of consciousness style of writing. He's very obviously a poet and his prose is very flowery, and almost Miss Bates levels of rambling. He's also clearly a Scot from the volume of swear words he manages to fit in!
.
I came across Michael Pederson through the Gray Day events in the Oran Mor every year, and his poem about Alasdair's chair. I've never really listened to Frightened Rabbit but remembered the posts on my socials when Scott Hutchison went missing and friends and fans were asking for help looking for him.
.
The book is about the friendship between Michael and Scott, the days leading up to Scott's suicide and Michael's grief. It's also about the other Boy Friends who have shaped Michael's life and I enjoyed the emotion of these, rather than the toxic masculinity image of male friendship we're usually presented with.
.
I would definitely recommend this one, but obviously trigger warnings for suicide and death as well as drug use/addiction.

This book is so beautifully written. Even though it deals with tough topics it also has a lot of warmth and humour. The author has some important things to say about the nature of friendship and how notions of masculinity can get in the way of expressing emotions especially in male friendships.
