I have never read anything quite like this. In saying that I enjoyed it. This book is filled with a lot of characters and jumps through time, therefore can be confusing and reading some reviews, it is obvious that some people were not paying attention. If you are looking for a light easy read this is not for you. If you are wanting to read this I encourage you to do so, but stay focused. You think you know what is going on only to be left dumbfounded.

Another book where I could have used a character map to keep track of all the people moving in and out of the story. Disturbing story of a group of pedophiles, and the women they married and interacted with. Although the primary voices are those of one of the daughters who was abused as a child and is now in her early 40s, and a police officer investigating the killings of immigrant children in Sweden. Killings that look to be ritualistic in manner. The stories of the killings intertwine with multiple rape stories and flashbacks. Jeannette K’s investigation brings her in contact with psychologist Sofia Z as well as the daughter of one of the pedophiles.
The beginning was a little slow for me - but once it took off - I couldn’t stop reading. Tying the threads together at the end seemed a little off
Madeleine and Viggo coming to the “understanding” of Madeleine killing Viggo at Babi Yar was a leap for me - not sure how we got there

Some of the translation was reminiscent of a Kurt Wallender book. Must be the way Swedish grammar/dialogue translates to English.

Oooooof this book was hard to get through in places and had a pretty amazing twist that I didn’t see coming. The English language version is all three books combined and I may or may not have switched to the Swedish version so that I can get credit for reading three books instead of just one...

Really dropped the ball towards the end and I didn't need the transphobia in the final third either.

My final opinion is that this is a very readable thriller despite being 800 pages (I read it in 4 days), and I loved the two leads. But it's awkwardly plotted, and I thought at times it just was shocking and depressing just for the sake of being shocking and depressing. Considering the subject matter is already horrifying enough I don't think they needed to go the extra mile.

Loppua kohden ahmin kirjaa.

Jo ensimmäisestä osasta näkee, että tästä on todella tulossa mielenkiintoinen tarina. Luin Varistytön reilu viikko sitten, ja olen lukenut jo seuraavankin osan. Kolmas odottaa noutoa lähikirjastossa.

Sensitive material but I loved the multi-faceted characters and well-developed plot lines.
