This is the third in the series, but the first I read. I really enjoyed the characters. At times it felt a bit slow - then the pace picked up to fast. A series worth exploring.

Gritty. Complicated relationships. Fast-paced mystery woven with pain and confusion.

Yet another excellent mystery from King. Reminded me of some of the difficulties of being a teenaged girl, but allowed me to look at it from the perspective of my current age.

As much as I love King's writing, I don't find these contemporary detective novels as compelling as her Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes novels. I love her main character, a lesbian homicide cop, and her work and life partners, and I will always keep reading these books, but I am just a sucker for that British-style historical fiction and the sophisticate Mary Russell.
