I really enjoyed this book, but it is not an easy read (or listen) ... definitely not for the faint-of-heart. I am pretty sure I'd last about 2 minutes out there on the trail west. Those people faced more hardships that we can even imagine and this story brought a lot of that to life. More than once I wanted to cry along with the characters for the things they were having to endure. If you can handle the occasional descriptions of violence, blood and gore (there is also one rape scene), and the occasional language, I would recommend this very moving story. I think I will read other titles by this author in the future.

Having grown up in Northern Nevada along the California Trail, I love stories about it’s history and the people that forged my home. It is a sad, yet hopeful history.

I also love that this story is based on real people and events. There’s literary liberties, sure, but also a raw realness. Life was hard along the trail. Accidents happened. Cultures clashed. Death, grief, and hope was ever present.

I like the way that the Native American cultures were portrayed through multiple lenses-the military, the emigrants along the trail, different tribes along the way, etc.

Heavy topics including death, murder, scalping, rape, and grief are addressed in a tasteful way-with enough description to understand the heartache and tragedy without going overboard.
