Oh my gosh. The ending had me weepy. I was unsure about this book, at first. I'm not an historical fiction girly. I'm so glad I stuck with it. Some slow parts, but the story was amazing. Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed this book, but it is not an easy read (or listen) ... definitely not for the faint-of-heart. I am pretty sure I'd last about 2 minutes out there on the trail west. Those people faced more hardships that we can even imagine and this story brought a lot of that to life. More than once I wanted to cry along with the characters for the things they were having to endure. If you can handle the occasional descriptions of violence, blood and gore (there is also one rape scene), and the occasional language, I would recommend this very moving story. I think I will read other titles by this author in the future.

-historical fiction
-strong character development
-forbidden love
-grief
-two cultures at odds with moments of understanding, grace and peace.

A journey following Naomi and her family to California via the Oregon Trail.

Reading about the dangers travelers faced while making this trek gave me anxiety. From Cholera, to giving birth, inclement weather, and wagon malfunctions…so many things can and often didn’t wring for these people.

My favorite part of this book is near the end and I won’t give spoilers but the tenderness, compassion and understanding that was given to these characters at the end was touching and meaningful.

I will say the beginning of this book was a tad slow. Setting the scene and building momentum. Once I hit about 60% I knew I was hooked in until I finished it.

I’ve enjoyed a lot of Amy Harmon but this one was not it for me. Very grim story with a lot of violence and death of beloved characters. I don’t have enough knowledge of Native American culture to know if this was dealt with sensitively, but I have some questions there. Main character romance appears to be based on nothing substantial and doesn’t really grow.

This is a skip for me.
