The plot twist at the end... that was amazing! This really granted this book the fifth star.. it would have been four but that plot twist... oh man..

THERE ARE A LOT OF INCOHERENT SPOILERS BELOW JUST SO YOU KNOW

This book is very very different from its predecessor, namely that our world view is about 50% from Ringer/Marika's POV, 25% from Cassie's, 10% from third-person Evan, 10% from third-person Poundcake, and 5% from unattributed/omniscient voice whereas the first book was a nice 65% Cassie, 35% Ben.

I REALLY LIKE RAZOR I HOPE HE'S OKAY. I like Ringer a lot more now than I did at the end of the first book. I like Ben a little less but he didn't go too far as far as development. Sam is starting to scare me with his whole crazy army mindset. I love Poundcake and I'm so sad but so happy that we got to see his mindset before he went.

Also that whole twist with Ringer and Vosch totally wrecked my shit. I'm losing my mind. Are there aliens at all? WHAT IS HAPPENING?!??

After The Raven King then The Last Star is my next most anticipated book now. PLEASE CAN IT JUST BE SPRINGTIME SO I CAN HAVE THESE BOOKS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE??!???!?

**There are some vague spoilers in this review, but nothing specific. **

If it weren't for the ending, this book would have been rated lower. It was super slow and kind of boring at first, but it picks up around the triple digits. There was a lot of repetition, as well. I think Yancey used some variation of the phrase Infinite Sea at least a dozen times, and I felt like Ringer and Vosch went back and forth for way too long. Still, I enjoyed Ringer's story so much more than Cassie, Ben, and Evan. At least Ringer was smart enough to realize that all the revelations at the end of 5th wave made absolutely no sense.

I have to say, the level of physical abuse all of the characters take without dying requires a massive suspension of disbelief. They have no medical supplies or antibiotics yet are walking around with open gunshot and stab wounds, kicking down doors with broken legs, receiving multiple head wounds and being tossed 20 feet into walls, jumping out of crashing helicopters, and surviving vaporizing bomb blasts from yards away. Not to mention Zombie is weak as a kitten thanks to the plague. They would have all been dead of trauma, shock, or sepsis long ago.

Some spoilery questions:
SpoilerNow that Evan broke his nanobot controller is he human again?
Why is Ringer the only one with enough sense to realize that incorporeal aliens would have no need for a planet? Must be all the brain trauma making everyone else stupid.

A pretty fast and fun read overall. Compared to the first book, this is better in some ways but worse in others.

First, the improvements: there is little to almost no romance in this book. It's not that I am against it per se, but rather against the immature nature of it in the first book. So getting rid of all the romance is an improvement in that sense. Even better would have been to keep the romance, but make it more mature, less whiny. Second, there is lots of action, in fact, the book is full of it. This makes for a really fast paced, gripping story. And that's about it for the improvements.

On the other hand, the increase in the amount of action, coupled to the fact that this book is significantly shorter that the first and focuses mostly on new characters means that there is very little room for character development. So even though there is a lot of action, it just doesn't feel very exciting since the characters don't feel very real. There are also too many unnecessary POVs and jarring flashbacks and jumps in the timeline which just make the whole reading experience rather inconsistent.

In summary, still a fairly good read, not as good as the first one though. Less immature romance, more action but at the cost of poor character development and just overall lower quality writing.
