Okay, I actually didn't finish. This is one of my few DNF's. I got about halfway and I just can't go any further.
I had this on my reader for a while. I remember reading The Silver Chalice, The Robe, and of course, Ben Hur back in my youth and thought this might be in the same vein. However, the writing is so florid that I'm just skipping huge sections just trying to find something that advances the plot. We have Vinicius and Lygia who are in love, but she's a Christian and he's a Roman noble. The Apostle Peter and Paul of Tarsus convert Vinicius; meanwhile, Nero is running around Rome and Italy. That's it after 300 pages. I haven't even got to the burning of Rome and the persecution of the Christians which I hope could be more interesting. BUT I JUST CAN"T READ THIS ANYMORE!!!!

An historical drama that dwells into an epoch I know dimly. Sure, I knew about the burning of Rome and the persecution of Christians and the majority of the world changing events included in this story, but the author gives it a tone of reality; in fact, it took a strong stomach to read through the different persecutions (I do have a vivid imagination).

The characters do lack something, the story is so sweeping that they fall on the way side. I mean, as fascinating and interesting as the narrative is, the people inhabiting it are not fully realized, they didn't seem real to me excepting St. Peter who I was a little in awe of even though I'm an atheist.

This is worth being read and a lot of people must have thought that when it was first published since it did win the Nobel of Literature.

Stunningly written. The story is emotionally investing(especially if you are in interested in Rome's civilization, Ancient Grece and Latin) and gripping, the characters are unique and fascinating. The book definitely makes you feel a connection to them and for instance Petronius literally became one of my all time favorite characters and Ligia and Vinicius'relationship through out the book was absolutely heartwrenching, but definitely beautiful. Overall, the book for sure leaves an impression on you and it's worth a read and a reread as well.
