I picked this book off of my host's shelf after moving to a new city. It was a paperback- the cover proudly advertising the new star Scarlett Johansson in the feature film, the laminate flaking off. In a tumultuous time of adjusting to many new things in my life, this was a comforting and predictable read to come home to. The characters' inner lives were all surprisingly well-rendered. There were a few things that fascinated me about the book. One was the comically absurd level of wealth involved in all aspects of the story. The other was the ending. Spoilers:
The conceit of the main character's journey to the ranch in the middle of the country is to repair her passion for life after her best friend was killed in front of her in a traumatic horse-riding/truck accident. Her horse is also traumatized. The titular horse whisperer who owns the ranch rightly interprets that both the horse and the girl feel themselves at fault for the accident. At the end of the story, the girl runs away from the ranch in anger after learning that the horse whisperer and her mom have been having an affair. In the wilderness, the girl is trapped by a group of wild horses threatening to stampede. The horse whisperer goes after the runaway girl, and sacrifices himself in front of her to protect her from the horses. It is heavily implied that the man could have gotten away with his life, but felt he deserved death after "ruining" their home life. This is a baffling narrative decision. Why would watching another person die in front of her allow for any kind of closure for the girl? Is infidelity only resolved by a death sentence? Did the horse whisperer's death somehow satisfy some deep wish for vengeance in the girl?
These questions have obviously been plaguing me since I finished the book 7 months ago. There is no one in my life who has read this book, and no one I know who I would recommend it to. So I appreciate being able to exorcise them here. I have not watched the film, but I am curious whether they made any changes to this strange choice.

Olen viettänyt lapsuuteni Hevoskuiskaaja-elokuvaa katsellen. Nyt vasta luin kirjan ensimmäistä kertaa. Kirja ja elokuva myötäilevät kiitettävästi toisiaan, tosin kirjan lopusta en tykännyt.
Kirjan luettuani nyt totean asian mitä en olisi uskonut sanovani. Elokuva on parempi.

Šī grāmata man asociējas ar laiskām bērnības dienām, kad atceros savu mammu to lasām. Un viņai šī ir viena no mīļākajām grāmatām, laikam tāpēc stāstaā iedziļinājos nedaudz savādāk :) Arī ļoti labs tulkojums.

Not my kind of book. And I actually liked the movie more than the book. I don't often say that.
