I picked this book up on a whim and really enjoyed it. The ending was abrupt, so I've been eagerly awaiting the sequel ever since. The art is stunning and the main character is so easy to root for. Can't wait for more!
A sweet graphic novel about a person that is "thirteen years old, black, and questioning what was once a firm belief in God." They go on a hiking trip with a Christian group where they feel very out of place, luckily there's another kid they can relate to.

I loved the diversity but I wish it had been a bit longer and gone more into the characters.

Where is the rest of it??
I love the story, the art, the inclusion. I picked up immediately that Charlie is queer, even though in the reviews it seems to have been a bit subtle for straight/cis audiences.
I also had the benefit of finding the webcomic on a list of comics to read about queer characters so I was already ready for someone to be LGBT.
And yes, the "message" is convoluted in the same way that being a 13 year old queer, black kid questioning your faith and everything around you can be convoluted.
I think it raises questions that don't have a perfect answer. What is the best way to handle our history of enslaving and then oppressing black and indigenous women of America? When this topic comes up, is Charlie upset about the way it's handled, is she just hurt and excluded by the memory that it happened? Is she just having a really bad time on this whole trip overall and this was just one too many problems to think about?
Gillman provides these problems to us as questions. Not answers. Complicated, intersectional and important to consider questions. Even as we make safe spaces we inevitably exclude others. It takes constant effort to be inclusive.
I only have one problem with this story:
WHERE is the rest of it????? There's a webcomic which hasn't been updated since 2017, there's a Kickstarter but that seems to have been for the book I just read. What happened? What's next? Are they going to make it to the summit? Do they all get eaten by bears??? If anyone has found out I would love to know.

I liked this graphic novel, but the ending felt super abrupt. Sometimes I enjoy an ambiguous ending, but I think this story would have benefitted from the hikers actually making it to the ceremony.
so i picked up this book on a random shelf on library with absolutely zero expectations and ended up being pleasantly surprised!
this graphic novel covers so many important topics ranging from blackness, queerness, intersectionality, white feminism, religion, etc.. it was very refreshing reading from the pov of a black queer character questioning their faith. i think that this book did a great job at depicting micro aggressions to just blatant uncomfortable situations that may come from white straight spaces.
the artwork in this graphic novel was created using colored pencils and the color palette, scenery, and designs altogether were beautiful. the amount of effort that artists always put in for books/shows like these will never fail to put me in awe.
i would have rated this book higher, but the ending felt really abrupt to me and i also kinda just wish it was more detailed bc i would have connected with the characters more. that being said though, this is an amazing light read and would def recommend :-)

I liked this a lot more than other reviewers. Obviously it ends as if the author meant to write a second half, but the first half was pretty good lol
