Some of the characters and their motivations made them unlikeable. Jude sucked big time. Sartori in his original form was despicable. Almost everybody in this book was either gray or flat out evil. The “fantastical” elements were only some times fantastical. The horror moments were truly horrific.

A major flaw with this book is that I did not care about the success of the main characters one bit. There is a part where a character says that he is a friend of the main character and my first thought was “why?” I would NEVER be the main character (Gentle)’s friend and I never saw a reason to root for him.

The world building is really great and so interesting that it was really disappointing for the end to reinforce gender stereotypes. You are creating a new world with queer characters - why wouldn’t you imagine a world without gender stereotypes?

I spent so much time on this book and I do think some parts are interesting and innovative but overall not worth the 800+ pages

I ended up skimming it somewhere after page 300, which is my version of DNF, I've only done that three times before. The general idea was quite interesting but the execution was tedious.

A shame, I really wanted to like this one but I don't think it was for me.

Got 300 pages into it and had to put it down. Too much going on, with not enough going on, if that makes any sense. Just didn’t have my attention, and kind of felt like a chore to read. Will try another Clive Barker book soon, as I’ve heard from a few Imajica is not his best.
