This was ok. Even I, who am not usually good at solving mystery plots early, knew who the villain was in less than a hundred pages. Unfortunately it took me longer to like or really care about the main characters. This wasn't a bad book, but I can tell this is one of the author's earlier books. I found her Dark Elf character and her beserker companion in the other trilogy much more likable than the cranky Arilyn and foppish with a secret Danilo.

This is a pleasant surprise. After quite a few ordinary Forgotten Realms outings I come across this. Has a fairly complex plot for a D&D novel and the characterisations do try to rise above the plain. Most importantly, the writing flows and is gimmick-free. I've heard good things about Elaine Cunningham and I can see those opinions were vindicated. More like this, please.

First book in a series set in the D & D world of Forgotten Realms.
Really well written, featuring interesting characters and a good murder mystery plot running through it.
The story moves at a good pace, with the heroes picking up clues here and there as well as hints about the background of the main character, Alisa Moonblade.

Probably one of the best D & D books I've read in a long time, and will be looking for the next book in the series to see if the author can keep it going.
