Wow, what a beautifully written book! I really enjoyed the side-by-side stories as Katie followed in Mia's footsteps and the slow reveal of everything that happened. My one beef with the story is that all the random little twists and turns were, for the most part, incredibly predictable. At no point did I find myself going, "Wow, I never saw that coming!", which is kind of a bummer. But, that certainly doesn't detract from the fact that this is a poignant, thought-provoking and sometimes frustrating story. All the characters have flaws, all of them make mistakes, but it's hard to stay upset at them because they've also all been hurt by someone they loved and trusted. It's incredibly realistic.

Sisters shouldn't screw the same people...life lesson

adventurous dark emotional reflective sad medium-paced

The travel in this novel is spectacular as is the journey of a relationship between sisters.

I was in the middle of reading a different book when I put it down and picked up this one. I've had difficulty with reading things in the last few years; my brain doesn't seem to like focusing so much anymore. I wasn't having an easy time with the one I'd been reading and I got worried it was just my streak dropping off. But that proved not to be the case, because I could barely put this one down.

I don't know if I'm just partial to stories about sisters because I love my OWN sister so much or what, but the relationship depicted in this book was so poignant and moving, it made me mist up a few times. Not only that, but I felt it fleshed the two women out really well and in a very relatable way. It moves along very nicely, very compelling, and I was always pleased with where the POV shifts began and ended; nothing felt belabored or tedious. A really satisfying read, would recommend.

I received this book free in a SavvyMom/Harper Collins Canada giveaway. This probably isn't a book I would have picked up on my own, but I really enjoyed it! The writing was great and the story definitely drew me in. When I got about 50 pages from the end, I basically told my kids to look after themselves because I needed to finish! I thought the characters and relationships in the book were genuine and believable. I did guess the outcome somewhat, but I don't think that detracted from the story or the reading experience. I will definitely seek out more books from this author since I very much enjoyed this debut!

I have a copy of this book if any friends would like to borrow it...

I'm not sure which list I found this book on, but I'm glad I did. A beautifully written story about the love/hate relationship between two sisters. I highly recommend it.

Loved this book! Full of suspense and intrigue. Raced through it because I wanted to know what happened. A sad yet also uplifting story.

A novel about sisters who were estranged.... The way we gradually discover where the fault lines are is well handled, and the characters have enough depth to be interesting. The story opens when the responsible older sister, Kate, hears of Mia's death, possible suicide, in Bali and is told through both points of view - with Mia's being told partly in diary form. The complexity of that narrative structure is handled well, and does not intrude. More psychological than thriller, though, and the ending a bit too predictable, and safe.
