WOW. Adichie did it again, this time just in 35 pages. This is a deep and beautifully written story about a mother-daughter relationship.
"Ours was an ancient story, the woman wants the baby and the man doesn’t want the baby and a middle ground does not exist. What would a middle ground be? We couldn’t have half a baby."
Zikora is having the baby alone. Her mother is there during the birth. Adichie tells us about these two women and their relationship, the men in their lives and their burdens and wounds. The mother is strict, judgmental and condescending towards Zikora's struggles. As she sees her mother taking care of her new born son, Zikora begins to truly understand and appreciate her mother.
Extraordinary storytelling. 4.5 stars!

lovely
A beautiful read - turmoil and somewhat resolution, but never too sure with a newborn. I enjoyed Zikora starting to see her mother as a woman, human, towards the end instead of just her mother. Beautiful.

It was good, and I cried while reading some passages. But at times I felt like there could've been more explanation.
