This is a fascinating look at family dynamics that also does a good job of exploring the realities--and breaking down some of the stereotypes--about mental illness and how it affects families as well as individuals.

Wow, what a fantastic book. I read the last 550 pages of this book in one day, disregarding the myriad other things I was supposed to get done. Excellent writing -- every time I thought I knew what was going to happen next (and hoping it didn't, because that would be too predictable) he threw in a curveball or two. The ending actually seemed a little too happy for the rest of the book, but had it ended any other way I might've wanted to jump off a bridge.
Parts of the book were so brutally human that they were difficult to get through, but difficult in the kind of way that wrenches your heart and connects you even deeper to the story. I will be thinking about this book for weeks to come...this is what good writing is supposed to be.

Whilst I was slightly daunted by the length of this book, it was a great read from start to end. Funny in parts, sad in others, and thought-provoking.

Loved it, in spite of the amount of time it took me to get through it (mother of two working full time outside the home - that should explain!). The ending wasn't quite what I expected, but enough to tie off loose ends without making it too "happily ever after-ish". I could relate to every character in the book on some level. I would definitely recommend this to friends...a sign of a good book imo!

Csodálatos regény, igazi kincs, amiről nem is tudtam, hogy mennyire fogom szeretni, miközben majdnem egy évig várt a polcomon olvasásra. Wally Lamb története elég kemény, mind lelkileg, mind morálisan. Olvasás közben képtelen voltam nem azon gondolkodni, hogy vajon én mit tennék Dominick helyében. Vagy akár Domenico helyében, amikor már egy kicsit szimpatikusabbá vált, és az élete tragédiája sejlett fel a lapokon.
A könyv központi kérdése természetesen Thomas, azonban annyira sok szálon és időben fut a cselekmény, hogy ha a legmélyebb problémát kellene egy szóban leírnom, akkor az a származás lenne. Az ikrek, legalábbis Dominick folyamatosan küzd azzal, hogy az anyja sosem mondta el, hogy ki az apjuk. Domenico a felesége származásával küzd. És lehet, hogy ez meglepő, de mostanában annyira sokszor előkerülnek a transzgenerációs problémák, hogy kicsit úgy éreztem, hogy ez a legmélyebb gyökere a regényben vázolt problémáknak.
Természetesen bőségesen felvet morális dilemmákat is. A beteg ikertestvért minden áron meg kell menteni? Vajon joga van tudni az egyénnek a felmenői titkait? Mit jelent a hűség, és meddig kell vagy érdemes elmenni a másik emberért? Aki rosszul bánt velünk, megérdemel új esélyt? Mit jelent a szerencse? Miért pont én menekültem meg?
