The Best We Could Do is a debut graphic novel memoir by Thi Bui. It walks us through this family’s immigration journey from Vietnam to America. All of this is told while the author reflects on becoming a mother. Legacy is a big part of this story. It is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time.

This would make an excellent book club pick. There is so much to discuss from the artwork and color choices to the family dynamics and how people respond to that level of crisis.

I highly recommend this.

A moving reflection on family and the relationships between parents and children and people and time/place. Thi Bui addresses heavy topics with sensitivity and compassion for subjects.

A tough story to get across. The art is certainly always good enough for the stories, but some of it is very beautiful. A personal story of war and struggle and parenthood and pregnancy. And war and hunger and escape. It may be pulling some punches, but is a lot of remaining darkness. Definitely a more specific history. Worth reading.

Generation trauma is explained in this book with the back drop of the Vietnam War in Vietnam.
Great resource to explain conditions for families that migrated to the US after the war.
