I really appreciated how approachable Oluo made her work, without ever pandering. This was a solid read and I liked that chapters ended with really practical information on how this can connect to your daily life and what you can actually do. I definitely think in the time since this book was written, so much has changed and happened that there's a lot to expand on. Oluo herself acknowledges this in the preface, talking about how she did not include enough about Indigenous peoples and that was an oversight. I thought Oluo was thoughtful, engaging and wrote a great book. This is definitely a book I'll be referencing and re-reading down the road.

Great practical information and advice for anyone (particularly if they are white like me) who wants to know more about racism/anti-racism and have more evidence to use when talking to people who aren't convinced that racism is a problem.

Ijeoma presents a very informative, illuminating and inspiring set of arguments for the racial disparities in our American society. A must read for all, but especially if you are white and want to be an anti-racist ally.

This book is a great primer for delving into conversations about race with anyone. It's not the first book I've read like this, but it is one of the better ones. Not only does Ms Oluo provide information explaining the issues, but she also provides many opportunities to put your new-found knowledge into practice. This ranges from things you can say and do, and things you shouldn't, to a handy discussion guide for your book clubs at the end.

The chapters are laid out thoughtfully and cover a lot of info without being too dry or preachy. Many of her personal anecdotes broke my heart and/or made me enraged. We white folks need to be having these discussions with other white folks so that Black folks don't have to keep dealing with white supremacist bullshit.

A very good entry level book about race (as the title suggests). Very concise and informative.

If you’ve read a handful of race books before then you probably won’t get a whole lot of new information out of this one, but if you’re interested in learning and just starting out then start here!
