I'm normally not great with writing advice (or any advice) books. I am in LOVE with this book, and want to shout it from the rooftops. Listening to Charlie Jane Anders narrate her own book was like sitting in conversation with the author. Comfortable. I felt seen in so many ways as a writer, and while yes, there were still moments of "I can't put in that kind of work, my brain doesn't work that way" shame, there were SO MANY FEWER of those moments. This book made me feel good about writing, about continuing. It energized me to get to work editing (a hard thing for me to feel good about, so that's impressive).

I borrowed the audiobook from the library, and halfway through I knew it was a keeper and went and ordered the hardcover to own. I will go through and mark some passages I want to return to again when I need to hear that advice.

The world is on fire. We don't need to let our creativity burn with it. Thank you, Charlie Jane Anders, for everything you've said here.

I don't usually read non-fiction or books about writing, so I'm not quite sure what I would rate this. There is definitely some helpful advice in there but my brain is now more full of the things I 'should' do or include to make my story (as-yet unwritten) better. It didn't really make me eager to start, lol.

Like getting a pep talk from Charlie Jane every time I crack it open. Some essays spoke to me more than others, but I love a writing book that makes me feel excited to write.

Wonderful writing advice and inspiration, wrapped up in prose that feels like a warm hug. This was 100% the book I needed for these times.

I greatly enjoyed reading Never Say You Can't Survive - Anders' tone is warm and inviting, it feels like she's having a conversation with you. That said, the balance between personal essays and writing advice sometimes felt off-kilter - both topics were glanced over, rather than being fully explored. However, the exploration of writing as a coping mechanism for trying times was very interesting to read. Although I'm not sure who the writing advice was targeted at, this was an engaging read and I would be keen to see more nonfiction from Charlie Jane Anders.
Thanks to Tor and Netgalley for the ARC.
