Good, but the ending felt a bit rushed, which is a shame because Hodge's writing is so lovely. I think this could definitely have been a full-length novel. There was plenty of material there.

3.5 stars! i loved this story (and the characters) so very much and it would’ve definitely been more memorable if it was a full length novel but ☹️

This was really good.
It wasn't as good as Cruel Beauty tho it was a quick read.
My only complaint is that Ingifex wasn't in it very much.

My only quibble is, why is this novella so short? Oh, right. It's a novella. Longer than a short story but shorter than a novel. Sigh.
But see, despite its meager length, Rosamund Hodge still successfully made Gilded Ashes as dark and eerie as Cruel Beauty. Hodge wrote this just as how I like my short stories written--in a manner that allows the readers to feel all the emotions in the short span of time. Four for you, Rosamund Hodge! You go Rosamund Hodge!

That was exceedingly odd. I don't think short-stories work too well in such a complex world. I'm excited I got a glimpse of the Cruel Beauty Universe (because there wasn't much of that in Cruel Beauty) but I feel like Maia could have used an entire book. Romance in a novella is always rushed and, finally, we never even met these characters in Cruel Beauty. Other than that, it was pretty fascinating.
