For: readers looking for a sweet own voices book that celebrates family history.

Possible red flags: protesting; social issues hinted at but not explained.

We all have stories to our names. Sometimes we get to know them - my middle name is after my great-grandmother. Sometimes we don't - my birth mother insisted my adoptive parents keep my birth name, though none of us know why. There's something magical about learning the story of your name. Alma's story is just as magical. Family history and embracing one's own identity make this book a major win.

Parents need to be ready to answer questions! After hearing Alma’s story, kids are sure to want to know where their own name’s origins. A beautifully illustrated story of Alma’s long name and the family that gave her each one of them.

@candlewickpress #partner This is the sweet story of how Alma Sofia Esperanza Jose Pura Candela got her name, told to her by her father, and it is absolutely fabulous. It will be available in both English and Spanish editions, although the English version does also include some Spanish words on signs in the book. The author's note about her own LONG name and how she despaired over it while growing up in Lima, Peru before growing to love it later on in the US is a wonderful addition to the story. I will be purchasing this for my elementary library collection and reading to grades 1 and 2.

Thanks to Candlewick and the author for this review copy. It hits shelves on April 10, 2018. I am passing on to @kidlitexchange for further reviews!

A delightful story about a little girl with a big name, and the story of where all her names came from.

I appreciate this book as an introduction to discussion about names. I especially like to use it before talking about the names of plants. Sometimes names just sound fun, but many times they carry meaning or history.
