I've been waiting for this Irish children's urban fantasy series to really grab my attention, but at this point I think I'm ready to call it quits. (It doesn't help that this third novel is the last one that my library has available as an audiobook -- so although there's another 8 books and counting still to go, they really don't seem worth my effort.)
On three separate occasions in this latest adventure, the heroes have a run-in with the villains solely because both teams happen to arrive somewhere at the same time. That sort of sloppy storytelling isn't a dealbreaker per se, but it's emblematic of the problems in the series and how little they've improved as it's gone on. I thought the first two novels showed promise, but I'm not exactly grieving that this is where my library collection runs out.

My least favourite of the series so far, but the ending was really good. I will be continuing.
I love this book so much. These books get better as they go. Just thinking about the series gives me all the feels. So after two book/years of people trying to bring back these Faceless gods that want to destroy this world, they finally show up, and you can see how they really are a threat. I remember reading this for the first time and no really understanding how these gods could pose any threat and then you see them in action. The climax is the best part of this book, and the lead up isn't disappointing either. I feel like this book is more about characters than anything, because the plot allows the characters to show more.
Valkyrie is getting better at magic and Skulduggery and Valkyrie have each others backs. You can see their relationship growing, though Skulduggery has to go after Valkyrie more considering the things she gets into because of Skulduggery. I think there is a message that his highlighted in this book and it's that other character treat Valkyrie as an adult and there are others that treat her as if she isn't there. And Val knows that she can hold her own no matter how people treat her, but this world is constantly pushing her. There is so much tension between so many characters. Kenspeckles and Skulduggery. Fletcher and Valkyrie has some chemistry which I didn't see in this book till now. Ghastly comes back which is great because I love his character. He's a torture soul, there is always sadness when he's around. I don't know if that's in the writing or just me. Tanith is such a good character, she has this pride. Every time she doesn't win a fight she sulks because she wasn't good enough. The grand mage is annoying, and also Crux. It's like the authority in this series can't work with the characters and what they need to do in order to succeed.
More people need to read this series, I don't know why it isn't huge. Derek Landy is amazing, and so is this series. READ IT IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!!!!

Not the ending I was expecting, but because of that it made it even more mind blowing.
