The Diablerie attempt to do what Vengous couldn't. Welcome to the show, my beloved, Fletcher Renn. Fantastic entry to the series.
Constant fast-paced action, something is always happening; the brief narrative lulls that are present, are mere precursors to the intricately thought out sequences that soon follow.
Some of these sequences however, exist in isolation from the rest of the novel, and oftentimes are wholly irrelevant, save for the fact that they happen to interface with the main characters in some minute way.
Sometimes Landy will retroactively explain things in an offhanded way, as though they should be immediately obvious - this is usually done in relation to the magic system, which is amorphous at best.

The faceless ones is ‘face’ and shoulder above the 1st 2 books in this series. It is just a giant step up in every regard.
The stakes have been roughly the same in the 1st 3 books, different bad guys with the same goal as each other every time, culminating in them almost getting their way before being stopped by our protagonist’s. You’ll find all the same here, but the journey to get there is darker, it treats its audience with more respect. We see the repercussions of Skulduggery taking a child in as his assistant, characters are so rightfully upset about it, and they are hinting at Skulduggery being a much darker man than we realise.
The violence has escalated as well, it’s the first time I’ve felt that characters are in actual danger, and people you care about could and will die now. The descriptions are disgusting. The final fight here is horrible and terrifying, and so gruesome.

More like 3.5 stars, really.
Skulduggery Pleasant and his young assistant Valkyrie take on not only the Guild, but work to stop the entire world from being destroyed by the Faceless Ones. Tough work, especially when you don't get the respect you're due.
Valkyrie is growing up fast. I was hoping for more of her "real life" interaction, maybe some twisted plot with her reflection trying to take over her life and becoming independent, but no such luck. There is very little of the normal world in this third iteration.
The humor is still there, though for me it was tempered by the violence being cranked up a notch. Towards the end there were some parts that were just downright gruesome---not the best for Trevor. He remarked "how many more people are going to die before we finish this book?!!?"
Warren liked it a great deal, however. Note that Trevor laughed, though again, there aren't as many chances to laugh this time around. I do look forward to another one in the series; this ending just begs for a fourth title. In the meantime, we are taking a break from villains and their monologues, injuries and deaths and the extreme violence overall to read about a little mouse. :)

The best one so far. I've grown quite fomd of the main characters and can't wait to see what they get up to next.
Overall, it's still a bit too action-heavy, the story is never given time to breathe. I hope going forward to have a few quieter scenes with more dialogue, to give the characters more dpace to develop.
