“Man has, uniquely among living creations, been granted the ability to learn the rules of nature’s game, or at least some of them, or at least the ability to name the pieces.”
A funny little book, comprised of selections from Pliny’s “Natural History” with commentary from Pliny, commentary on the commentary from nephew Pliny the Younger, and occasionally an aside Pliny’s slave/scribe. It was very alive and bodily, with a wry sense of humor and a decent amount of fart/cum jokes (and some decent insight on top of all of it). Interested to see how this fits into a trilogy.

There is no plot, this is not so much a novel as a musing on/by Pliny the Elder and the Younger on the Elder’s work habits, goals, health, and death. Some people like fictional biography. I prefer actual biography with citations. Did P the E really work like this? I have no idea🤷♀️
