Very underwhelming. Very slow. Not my cup of tea. I'll try book 2 though.

This had all the ingredients I tend to fall for - misfits living on the fringe of society, creepy atmosphere, gory descriptions of violence, coming of age angst, monsters, time travel. Needless to say, this series is off to a good start. I don't quite love the characters yet but I expect them to grow in my estimation in the next books...

Cannot wait to read the next two in the series! Reminds me of X-men

The premise was intriguing, but ultimately, the story lacked. The photos are creepy, but they are used as an aside and added spontaneously throughout the plot. The main character, Jacob, will enter a room and there's a box of weird photos, or he'll be reminded of something in a photo he saw once, cue photo. I'm hopeful that the story picks up in the second book, but three months after finishing the first, I haven't felt compelled to start the second.

Not what I was expecting, but excellent none the less!! The story was compelling and the characters interesting and fun. Only downside: I felt the writing style was too childish and that really takes me out of a story.

I enjoyed the story very much but caution anyone who chooses the audio version: the narrator is fine using his own voice, but the various British accents are a tragedy, and by the second half of the book they are a major part of the story.
