What a GREAT follow-up to The Shadows Between Us... especially bc we got more of Alessandra and Kallias!!!!! Although I did not love Chrysantha near as much as Alessandra, I did love getting to fully understand how each sister became they way they are...and how they use their past to fuel their future!!!!! But let's talk about how each of their love interests are PRECIOUS and FIERCE!!!!! If you are looking for an easy to read fantasy duology, this is definitely a fun one to invest in!!!!! 4.5 rounded up to 5 STARS for The Darkness Within Us!!!!

I... I can't even. I was so excited to read this, especially after reading The Shadows Between Us (which was so good). I usually love Tricia's books but for some reason her sequels, that aren't part of the plot of the first book, always end up subpar (like in daughter of the pirate king). But this wasn't just subpar it was awful. The male lead gave me such an ick. Let's name all of his red flags:
- BRO literally acts like a man child like wdym you don't know basic politeness, like dude can't even dress right.
- This ugly ass mfkr really justified
killing a bunch of people and putting other people in danger by saying that the people he be killing are evil (which they are but just admit that you're just killing ppl because they wronged). He's acting as if he himself is not evil. Like bro you'rehalf demon bsfr. - Him also basically trying to make Chrysantha homeless made me so mad. Like you're seriously trying to get her out just so
you can join a higher society all for you to get close enough to kill the king. This whiny ass baby.
The attraction between the two mc's also felt really forced and tbh Chrysantha shouldve chosen Kyros. At least he can treat her right. (Chrysantha really gave me lesbian vibes with her going on and on about how all men suck or smth, but she still decided to get with the biggest man child ever in a book. Like homegirl can't get her priorities straight.) All in all, I would still highly recommend reading this authors other books because they are *chefs kiss*.
4.5⭐️
My only complaint is that I wish this had more spice!!! I was giggling and smacking my forehead the entire time. LOVE.

I enjoyed Chrysantha's story but not quite as much as the first book. Similarly to the first book, the story feels rushed. There is much to work with here but it needs to be flushed out more. I'm still left feeling confused about the origins of duke and what exact powers he has.
