A sweet Cornish romance, I haven’t read the rest of the books in this series but I think I should! Reminds me of Poldark!

Five stars, re-readable…what more do I need to say. These last two books in this series have swept me away to Cornwall and I’m not sure I ever want to come back. I loved the mermaid/sea-maid incorporation to this story and make sure you read the Author’s notes at the back of the book. Fascinating!! I was so immersed in this story that I didn’t want it to end, then I needed to know how it ended, then it ended and I was sad it was over lol. I will be re-reading this one over and over and over! Absolute perfection!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

In the Waves of Tristwick combined some of my most favorite things in the world. Books that transport you are my favorite. Also, the ocean. The smell, the sound, the salt, the sand, all of it. It’s home. So Cornwall, yes!!!

This book starts out with enemies to lovers since Morvoren has deep prejudices against fisherman and for good reason. Trevick, from the moment he pulls her out of the ocean is wary and untrusting of her. She doesn’t help matters by hiding who she is. His guilt convinces him to take her to his home for recovery and layer by layer the prejudices and the falsehoods are stripped away as a tentative friendship is formed, which eventually blossoms into a beautiful love story. I also adored his mother and sister, I cannot wait for Poppy’s story!

The chemistry and the banter between them was spot on. I was hooked from the first page and could not wait to see what happened next. I appreciated the research that must’ve gone into understanding the fishing trade of this time, the language and the mythology of mermaids. Those stories and songs interwoven into the book bring Cornwall alive! Reading an entertaining story while learning along the way is the key to wonderful historical fiction

Deborah is a consistently good author for me. I pick up a book she has written and know I'm going to like it. Even still, with my little Deborah pedestal, In the Waves of Tristwick blew me out of the water.
Trevik decides to bend the laws by directing his crew to pull in one more haul for the night. Instead of hundreds of fish, they bring up a mermaid. Morvoren has too many secrets and a convenient memory loss. With a town divided, Trevik attempts to keep his home life and crew at peace.
The romance is beyond sweet and the steady build completely engaging. I adored the setting, full cast of characters, and what, for me, is a unique background for a regency novel. Can I pretty please have a hunky fisherman that smells like lemons in my next life??
This can be read easily as a standalone despite it's position as fourth in the series. I'm thrilled that Poppy will be in book 5 and I would like it in my hands as of yesterday. I guess I'll have to wait impatiently though.
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

You guys!! Oh my goodness gracious!!!! This book was absolutely adorable! Deborah’s regency novels are so different that they stand out in a way you’ll always remember. Plus, Deborah is the Cornwall queen. Pretty sure if anyone mentions Cornwall, we automatically think of her books.

“She blew out a breath. What was the world coming to, now that she, Morvoren Hollow, admired a fisherman?” I absolutely loved this fourth book in Deborah M. Hathaway’s Cornish Romance series. Morvoren, the sassy spirited heroine and Trevik, the handsome flirtatious fisherman completely drew me into the story. I loved the witty dialogue, enemies to lovers slow-burn romance, and the twists and turns in this original story.

The last thing Morvoren wants is life with a fisherman. Running away from a cruel uncle and untenable marriage proposal, she decides to indulge in something her uncle has forbidden, a swim in the ocean. She has no idea her indulgence will land her in a fisherman’s net.

When Trevik and his fellow drifters pull in their net, the last thing they expect is a “mermaid” known to bring havoc and destruction. So when Morvoren is found caught in Trevik’s net, rumors quickly fly and to one superstitious older man, Edern, she’s a menace that needs to go. Trevik may have saved Morvoren’s life, but there’s hardly gratitude expressed. In fact, her sharp tongue at once intrigues but also infuriates him. With nowhere else to go and an injured ankle, Morvoren must find a way to endure until she can travel to her friend’s house. What she doesn’t expect is to find friendship, romance, and feeling part of a family again.

I loved the characters, not only Trevik and Morvoren, but his mother and sister Poppy too. Also enjoyed Trevik’s fellow fishermen, even the irascible Edern, and fell in love with this endearing fishing village where they all look out for each other and work together to survive.

There were so many swoonworthy scenes. I especially loved it when Morvoren accuses Trevik of not knowing how to flirt and boy does he show her he does. The romantic tension between the two is palpable and I loved the humorous good natured teasing moments between the two.

The Cornish setting is amazing and Ms. Hathaway really makes it come alive with her beautiful descriptions. I felt like I could hear the waves crashing on the shore and smell the salty sea air. I enjoyed the historical aspects of the novel and the careful detail the author includes in the story.

Highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the other books in the series. This book can definitely be read as a standalone, though may be more enjoyable for those familiar with previous characters who show up in the book. I can’t wait to read Poppy’s story and look forward to the next book in the series. Thank you to Deborah M. Hathaway for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review. 4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5.

Deborah Deborah Deborah....

In the Waves of Tristwick takes place on the shores of Cornwall. When a woman gets caught in a fishermen's net alive..but barely...she takes refuge in his home amongst his family and sets unease with some of the members of the community who think she is indeed....a sea maiden.

What Deborah does SO excellently is always making her books feel historically immersive. Its in the language, the tiny details, the scenery and setting and in the culture the characters represent.

I fell in love with Trevick. This fishermen is not one to ignore with a kind heart, a strong loyalty and a good physical form to back it up. His relationship with Morvoren starts off as slow...and little by little the sparks of attraction turn into a love that is worth rooting for. Everything about this romance feels so organic...from the moments the two characters spend alone...to the moments mixed in amongst family and friends. Morvoren has secrets to hide and when she finds the first place where she feels as though she belongs in years...her walls start to come down...even though she can't quite tame her quick tongue (which I loved all the more).

So many wonderful tender moments with moments that will just make you feel good and put a smile on your face!

I cannot think of a single thing that I did not enjoy about this book. Deborah has a cemented fan for life. Cannot wait for the next book in this series. Can most definitely be read as a standalone as I have not read the books before in this series but feel I missed nothing.

With her newest addition in the Cornish Romance series, Deborah Hathaway has written yet another wonderful story! I absolutely adore that while this is a historic romance, the writing style is so engaging and does not feel like you need to struggle through reading it. The character and world building really sucks a reader into Cornwall and the lives of its inhabitants. This is true of the entire series and not just In the Waves of Tristwick. While this is part of a series, you can read this story as a standalone. However, I binge read the entire series, starting with the novella, before reading this one and I do not regret that at all. So if you need someone to just tell you to read the whole series first, here’s your encouragement!

While out fishing with his crew, Trevik pulls a woman up from the sea who was caught in his net. In 1800s Cornwall, some of the men of his crew are quite superstitious and fear this woman be a sea-maid, a mermaid, who will call down a storm to destroy them all. But Morvoren isn’t actually a sea-maid is she? Or is she simply a woman with secrets? A lot of them? Morvoren’s supposed memory loss wreaks a lot of havoc for Trevik as his crew become distrustful of him and wants nothing more than for her to leave. Morvoren very much wants to get away from these fishermen but initially injuries from being caught in the net make that difficult. Moreover, she is trying to run from a life she does not want.

I loved the fieriness of Trevik and Morvoren’s initial relationship. He does not trust her. She is keeping many, many secrets. This causes a lot of tension between them. However, time does certainly help to mend the distrust on both sides. Both begin to open up. Until Trevik tries to save his crew at the expense of his feelings for Morvoren. At one point, I wanted nothing more than to slap him silly! Which I think is great writing on the part of the author because he was making me just so made. But, as with all good romances, there is a turning point where all becomes well again. There were some great twists that I was able to figure out but still made for exciting and dramatic reading!

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am leaving an honest and voluntary review.

ROMANTIC.

This had allllll of the romance y’all. Super swoony. Can’t believe I haven’t read any of the other books in this series. I must go remedy after enjoying this one.

It’s long for a regency (400 pages) and I would say I only noticed that a tiny bit. This is filled with plenty to keep the pages flipping. I liked the mixed of small quiet moments, and the bigger all out kind of scenes. A fun twist was the addition of mermaid lore. I loooove all things mermaid so this felt unique and fresh to the genre.

I adored Morvoren and Trevik. They had chemistry from the get go and the development was solid. Learning to build the trust between them as things piled against their favor. No ridiculous conflict to be found, but one that fit the actual premise of the entire story. I love a good reveal at the end, and Trevik showing Morvoren just how free she was, was absolutely precious.

Hathaway is one of my favorite regency authors and I love the way she tells stories!

Overall audience notes:

  • Regency romance
  • Language: none
  • Romance: kisses
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: near drowning, loss of parents (off page, but discussed), manipulative caregiver
