2.5 stars. There wasn't anything bad about it but I didn't learn anything new from this short story or gain any insight to the story. I know novellas are a hard line to walk, because there has to be something new to make it worthwhile but not critical so it has to be in the series itself. This just wasn't worth it for me and I'm still not as attached to Garnet

This was a great novella and a nice addition to the series. I like novellas like this that keep me engaged in a series while I'm waiting for the next book or give me interesting information. I've always liked Garnet's character, but we don't know much about him other than he's kind of a rich, spoiled, playboy, who likes to annoy his mother the Duchess of the Lake. It turns out there is more to him and his life than partying and causing trouble. The House of the Lake is one of the original Royal Houses and his mother is cold and always scheming to be at the top of the food chain, Garney has suffered because of her wickedness. We get to know Garnet a little better in this book and learn about how he came to play the role he does in the series.

This novella takes place when the Duchess purchases Violet, a surrogate, and takes us through Garnet's side of the timeline. Garnet has done something stupid, and to clean up his mess Lucian, the Electress' (kind of like the queen) lady in waiting, offers to clean up his mess in exchange for keeping tabs on Violet. The timeline is a bit accelerated as it is a short story, but we come to understand how Garnet gets involved in the action that takes place later in the story. Ewing does a great job explaining how Garnet ties into the story without retelling the whole first book.

This was a pretty quick read and feel like it was a good addition to the series. I'm looking forward to the conclusion of the series.

I loved this little novella from Garnet's perspective!! It's really cool seeing how Garnet's been a part of the whole thing since the beginning, and only because he was blackmailed into it. I liked the insight into how he sees Annabelle, and what he will do to protect his reputation,

like agreeing to Lucien's blackmail to save face from the Cyan incident.

I like his trait of loyalty and protectiveness, and the way he will still

follow through with the plan to get Violet to the morgue. I can't wait for the second one.

I really would have preferred a novella about the Duchess of the Lake tbh.

This was a good recap of [b:The Jewel|16068780|The Jewel (The Lone City, #1)|Amy Ewing|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1392220609s/16068780.jpg|21861160] from Garnet's perspective but... I don't really care about Garnet at this point in the series. Nonetheless, I had planned on rereading [b:The White Rose|24585267|The White Rose (The Lone City, #2)|Amy Ewing|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1443365160s/24585267.jpg|41931460] and this put me in a good position to do that. It just didn't really add much perspective to the overall story for me.
