The Appeal by John Grisham

This was too long. I've given the third star purely because I was drawn in by the first 100 pages and the last 100 pages, but the middle 300 got a little boring in places and quite often was a little too political for me. I would also have liked being able to root for a character - I feel like Wes and Mary Grace were painted as the "good guys" but all I got from them was that they are super duper hard working lawyers, y'all. So a strong start and finish, but I won't be going out of my way to track down loads more legal thrillers unless they're significantly better reviewed than this one.

I think I'm not used to reading Grisham's books anymore (which now tend more about politics). I got stuck quite long with this book and finally decided not to finish it.

The politics part brings me down, second attempt is again unfinished...

Spoiler alert: the little guys don't stand a chance in elections at any level when big money is involved. Political offices are for sale just like any other consumer good now. This book was an infuriating look into the corrupt world of politics in the US. Frustrating and eye-opening. Good book from one of my favorite authors.

I have always been a fan of John Grisham, but this book was a little disappointing. I usually can't put any of his books down, whether it's a court room thriller like the Summons, or one of his more introspective books like Bleachers. But for some reason I just couldn't get to excited about reading this book. It could have been the depressing nature of Cancer County or the stark realization of big business's strangle hold on politics. I think what bothered me most about the book is how Grisham sets the reader up, making you believe that one of the main characters in the book is going to have a change of heart, and do the moral thing, but this change never comes, and it goes by without explanation. This book is worth the read, but not one of my favorites.

Immensely readable legal thriller. The beauty of Grisham is in his level of detailing. I couldn’t put this book down! Loved every moment of reading this.
