I read it to complete the series but...

it's my feeling that the author wrote five books when it should have been three. There are too many characters, too many subplots -- and a great majority of them don't move the story forward. Yes, I feel bad Aris is missing his friend, but I don't need a whole chapter on raising horses. What are those horse nomads doing over there? Why do we care about them? I just feel like the book is padded waaay out.

However, I have a mysterious fondness for Gird's Cow.

Brought to a beautiful sure close like a river opening at the mouth. A steady flow of a fascinating world and steadfast characters. It will stay with me.

Getting to this book took too long. There were plenty of interesting details but in the end I didn't care all that much. And the bigger ending never felt earned. I don't think this takes anything away from the original trilogy. But it doesn't add much either. It's too bad - I think books following individual characters might have worked pretty well. And perhaps they still can be written.

Wonderful way to end the series. I was surprised at how some of it turned out though. We we could see more of what happened to the younger brother.

It finished a little too quickly, and some plotlines tied up VERY convenient-like. If you have been preparing a big bad for 4 books, he should not be dismissed in half a chapter...

A mostly satisfying wrap up to this series; not exactly what I expected, but that is generally more interesting. As always, I find the religious stuff fascinating, and there was a lot of cool stuff here in that regard. The ending does seem to leave a lot of room for more sequels, though I don’t think any are planned. And despite the author's note at the beginning, I felt this worked just fine without reading the two prequels about the historical figures (and frankly I like the characters trying to interpret old texts and stories and feel that knowing what actually happened is irrelevant). Anyway! A-.

I really enjoyed this as a conclusion to the series. It did spend more time on wrapping up all the plotlines than on any new plot, but it was for me a very satisfying wrapping up. There was a great deal of deus ex machina (or deus ex dragon, perhaps), but I like my fantasy with extra interfering gods, so that's all good in my view. This book felt a bit like the dessert at the end of a heavy series.
