Completely to my surprise, I loved this book. I got the ebook free at Amazon, and while I don't download every book that they offer for free, I did download this one. I'm trying to work my way through the free books instead of buying new ones, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm not a big "space opera" fan, and I never would have picked this one up after looking at the cover, but it hooked me from the first.

I'm working my way through the other four books in the series now. So much for not buying any more ebooks.

Actually, as science fiction goes, this was a really enjoyable story. I opened it. . .only meaning to see if I wanted it to be my next book or not. . .and fell in. First few pages had me caught and I didn't stop until I had finished it.

The story dives right in, and while there is a lot of 'boring days' passing on, the author manages to make the business descriptions and passage of time interesting. You KNOW things aren't going to be easy - and when they finally start complicating, the pace picks up fast.

This is a science fiction, and therefore doesn't take place on earth or the 'known area', but doesn't bog you down in history or scientific explanations, either. You basically dive right in, and learn of the setting as you need to know.

I did find the lack of explanation a little confusing at first. The different worlds were easy enough, but Ky's 'planet of origin' was not clear until the last few books. The name of the place did not seem like an actual name of a city, much less a planet. And its only later that one starts to figure it must be a planet. The other worlds were somewhat less confusing since she actually travels to them, but no huge explanation of any place is given either. Brief descriptions of clothing styles, and an amusing scene involving a local taboo is about the extent of it.

All in all, I can't wait to get to the next book.

Snore. Sad rich kid mopes about the universe. Nothing objectionable, I just felt no attachment to the characters or story 1/5 of the way through. Dnf at 19%

This book started off as great space opera. The climax appeared to happend about 3/4 of the way through the book leaving 25% of the book for the denoument. This seemed excessive especially since in mostly involved the protagonist telling everyone what happened in the first 3/4 of the story. This book needed to have a tighter ending.

Also, there was a bit about a model having a piece of important equipment in it that did not make any sense.

What did I like? I liked the main character. I cared about her and wanted her to succeed. However, everyone else seemed rather flat in comparasion. The situations they got in kept tension high for the first 3/4 of the book. The universe it was set in was interesting.

I will probably read the next book in the series because I do like the main character and want to see what happens next. I think the author left some clues in the first book that will fit in to later books.

3 stars. 3.5 for the first 3/4 and 2.5 for the denoument.

"Good. And the most important local taboo, on page eighteen, is underlined in green. Never, under any circumstances, sneeze without using a sprayer afterwards."
Ky had had no inclination to sneeze, but now her nose tickled. "But doesn't that spread infection?"
"It's symbolic Don't ask me, I think it's stupid, but you'd better buy a sprayer. The cheap ones are actually considered in better taste."
