“Maybe you have to keep your pain and loss to know that you can survive whatever life deals you. Perhaps without putting your pain in its place in your life, you became something of a coward.”
The Tawny Man trilogy feels like coming home to people you love and have missed, to finding new adventures and exploring lost worlds, and most of all feels like unashamedly following your heart, no matter the cost. Best fantasy trilogy I've read yet. Everyone should read this series.
10/10 - I can't put into words how fantastic this is, I'm rethinking every other 5 star I've ever given. The ups and downs of Fool's Fate are truly a testimony to Hobb's mastery in creating characters whose thoughts, feelings and decisions leap off the page.
This world is vivid and intricate, with all the magic, political intrigue and morally grey characters that I love in Epic Fantasy. Where Hobb excels above others is her ability to make this world feel so REAL, I truly felt as if I was with our unlikely crew on Aslevjal, facing an impossible yet necessary task. I really felt Fitz's divided loyalties and frustrating attempts at connecting with his broken "family". As a side note, I am so happy that as of this trilogy, I no longer find Fitz really annoying and whiny, yes at times he is frustrating, but I feel that Hobb's communication of his feelings and decisions has vastly improved since the Farseer Trilogy, such that it now felt like a natural part of the story.
The emotions between Fitz and the Fool in Fool's Fate is perhaps at its most heartbreaking and most understandable so far in The Realm of the Elderlings. Hobb interweaves a heartbreakingly beautiful relationship which goes beyond anything that is easy to communicate on paper, and yet their love for each other brought tears to my eyes. This series has put The Fool up there as one of my all time favourite characters. Hobb made me literally SOB for the final 300 pages or so, mostly from sadness, but also with her fantastically bitter-sweet ending.

7.5/10 Stars. ***SPOILERS***SPOILERS*** I give this novel a somewhat lower rating because of the fate of Burrich. I found that to be a terrible decision on the authors part and am still very upset about it. On the other hand, I am pleased with the outcome with Patience. I'm so glad they were finally reunited and she got to be with her son and grandchildren. Fitz still has the capacity to frustrate me beyond belief both in his stupidity and stubbornness, but he manages to still be loveable. I am definitely no longer a fan of Chade however. His treatment of Fitz, in a proprietary way, and seeking to continually overpower Kettricken and Dutiful is outrageous and offensive. Not to mention his surly attitude throughout this trilogy. Really ready for his character to go. Overall, a good book, but would have been vastly improved with Burrich's survival.
