I tried reading this book around the time of its publication but never got past a couple of chapters, and I felt like now was the time to give it another shot. sadly, something about the writing style still doesn't click with me. it's a really unique concept and the book does indeed read like the fairytale it's retelling, but somehow it remains surface-level and fails to create depth for the characters and the world. there was also a one-year time jump between parts 1 and 2, completely unmarked and unexplained, and it felt quite jarring to me. I was so ready to love this, so I'm disappointed that it didn't work out for me.

I'm really enjoying it, but it's a difficult read and I'm dumb. Will definitely pick it back up at a later date.

This probably became one of my favourite books ever. It feels like something precious I want to hold close and cherish over and over again.

Definitely a book I'll be re-reading. I know there's so much I missed, but god damn, does Valente develop some mesmerizing characters here. I know they come from traditional Russian folklore, but the way she filled them in and fleshed them out was truly incredible. I kind of fell in love with Koschei, not going to lie. Truly beautiful, but one that I KNOW I have to read again!
