Ok I loved this !! especially for the current political climate, I think this book is really powerful with the messages is has in how people weaponize religion and how oppressive governments can function
I also think that the overall message and the way the whole plot was organized w the pacing and just structure in general was great, it really drove home the whole impact well
I think at times it felt like the author was repeatedly making the same point with different words while trying to do a ‘show not tell’ sort of approach, especially at Nsukka, but I didn’t really mind, especially since the point of the novel is that it’s from the perspective of a 15 year old girl who’s never been ‘outside’ before
And, bouncing off of being 15… was it really necessary to have her in love with Father Amadi?? Like really?? I didn’t find the plot device useful in the message itself and it was just awfully gross, especially the way he was acting towards her despite supposedly not being interested in her … pedophilia because as far as I’m aware that man is over the age of 25

Absolutely loved it. I’ve always liked Chimamanda’s interviews and found what she had to say to be refreshing and profound, this story was the same. You can feel that the underlying theme in the story was nostalgia of an older Nigeria. Aunty Ifeoma is one of my favorite characters and Amaka as well. If you want a refreshing read with lucid and sometimes dreaming prose, Purple Hibiscus is your novel

Loved loved loved this book. It was so gut-wrenching at times, so heartbreaking, but so beautifully written and with such a compelling narrator in Kambili. I loved her aunt and cousins so much, and there was a lot of interesting duality in most of the characters. Would love to teach this sometime.
