I wanted to like this more than I did. I was frustrated with the main character, Kambili, who seemed too reserved. There were a lot of passages where her character keeps hoping that her brother Jaja would say something…but I felt like their relationship was underdeveloped. They were connected by their circumstances and their secrets, but it didn’t feel like they were very close. Several of the characters also felt one-dimensional to me.

This book was challenging. The parallels between colonization, the Church and home life was really interesting.  It's an interesting perspective on how colonization of religion really changes a person's whole identity.
