This book. Book seems too small a word for what the words on these pages encompass. This story is heartbreaking, beautiful, and everything else. There are no real words, nothing impactful anyway to say about this book as all the impact is already on every single word on every single page of Purple Hibiscus.

“God knows best,” I said. “God works in mysterious ways.”
“Of course God does. Look what He did to his faithful servant Job, even His own son. But have you ever wondered why? Why did He had to murder his own son so we would be saved? Why didn’t He just go ahead and save us?”

an interesting perspective on a very different life. i found the contrast of wealth to be eye opening and i love her style of writing.
First I tried audio, but I felt I must have zoned out, as it seemed like I was missing information. Tried print, abandoned it on p. 40. The father is one-dimensional (so far). I couldn't tell how old the narrator was -- seemed like maybe 10, but the book jacket says 15. Circumstances may have arrested her development, so her seeming young might have been intentional.
The first-person narration did not work for me. Third person would give us a reason to be a bit removed, just observers trying to figure out what's going on. I like unreliable narrators, but this is different. If a third-person narrator says, "Kambili heard XYZ. Then she went into her room and stared out the window," the reader can imagine what she is feeling/thinking. But if the first-person narrator says, "I stared out the window at the leaves," I have to conclude that she has no thoughts or feelings.
