Little did I realize, upon picking this up, that this is a book at the tail end of the Fables series. I liked it, but I really want to go back to Volume 1 and read that so I understand a bit more about all these characters.
What a low point. It was bad enough that they brought Jack back into it, but he is even more arrogantly conceited than ever before. Add to that a stupid story line that adds absolutely nothing to (and even detracts quite a bit from) the existing Fables story line, and you have a volume that is best skipped completely as it never should have been allowed to exist in the first place. (And we won't even mention the distasteful ongoing rape of Rose by Jack . . . "Oh, it's OK. She allows it because her sense of self worth has fallen to such depths that any degradation is acceptable.")
Really big let down after the dark ages volume. I hope next one is way better
March 2024: I begrudgingly re-read this for the few scraps of Fables plot update. It did solidify my determination not to re-read Jack of Fables, though.
December 2010: This book wasn't bad, but it had nothing to do with the current Fables storyline and was kind of disappointing when I expected a new installment of Fables but got another Jack of Fables book.

I am actually I bit surprised that I liked this volume as much as I did. All the negative reviews really had me worried, but it wasn't as bad as I suspected. Yeah, Jack is an absolute ass and I have zero interest in his spin-off series, which made this volume a bit annoying. But I though the Literals were (albeit SUPER cheesy) kinda fun, in a throw away silly way. I will be happy to abandon this plot and if it had taken more than the single volume for the story arch to finish, I would have been more upset. But, I don't mind it as a lighthearted filler issue in between the Adversarial Wars and whatever is coming next.
This was pretty bad. I'm a big Fables fan, but nearly nothing that made any sense happened in this one.

Zero stars. What an inane and unnecessary interruption to the story. I can't believe I actually read all of it and expected it to matter in any way.
