This was so bad it nearly made me stop reading the series. It took two cute comic book chicks to convince be to buy the next one.
Basically Jack switches places with Snow and Bigby, and the whole thing isn't too spectacular.
Jack lets the Fables know about the literals and the Thorn threat, a literal intending to write the entire universe out of existence. Snow and Bigby team up with Gary and the Page girls while Jack runs away to the farm...for reasons.
There is a lot of meta forth wall breaking as we are introduced to a slew of new characters, the genres.
All in all, it takes a very long time for nothing to actually happen. Why oh why was this story arc 9 issues long!?
I was hoping that this crossover would kill the Jack title and his characters but alas the crap-fest shall continue. Everything that was not Jack was enjoyable though.
Blech. Too meta and full of Jack, my least favorite character.
The archetype idea was interesting, but the execution is meh.
I have never read any of the Jack books, but I'm assuming they have a different, more comedic tone and that was emulated in this book. It felt weird to transition from the dire events of the last book to this one, full of levity.
This was a really fun read! Note to self to look into the series it's crossing over with.
adventurous
funny
lighthearted
fast-paced
I think this would have made more sense a few issues earlier in the Fables timeline. It would have been a good transition from one antagonist to the next though I can see why it was put where it was for several plot related reasons. Though I made a small attempt to get into the Jack story once I saw what a part of the cross over it was I just couldn't get into it and my understanding of the literals and their very essence was a bit lost on me but on the flip side the Page sisters really shined in this book. The Fables portion was medium level, some ups, some moderate moments, some Boy Blue obsessed cult stuff lead by a Badger named Stinky...you know, typical Fables stuff.
However I don't think it was really necessary to put Bigby through that torture and what was the point of Babe the Ox?
