A very smart crime novel. The author created unexpected heroes and villains that drove a very compelling story. I look forward to reading more of her books.

1 star because I did not like it.

This one just did not do it for me at all. I didn't like the moony romantic elements, and a lot of the dialog did not ring at all true for me, particularly when it comes to Evan crossing the line right into sexual harassment territory when it comes to Diana. I had so little investment in the story that when a pivotal scene happens near the end, I couldn't remember who the character Evan encountered was and had to search the book to remind myself. Not a good sign. And, of course, I did not care for the light supernatural elements. I definitely won't be continuing with this series.

These two main characters are probably the most unique that I have read in a thriller. Addie is a female detective in the Chicago Police Department, while Dr. Evan Wilding has dwarfism and is a forensic semiotician. They were likable characters overall. However, the atmosphere of the Chicago area didn't really do anything for me. The writing is what made me not love this book. It was very dense, but that being said, it was still informative and I learned a ton about Viking culture. The plot was intriguing and again very unique, but it went a little too long for my liking. I did not predict the perpetrator of the crime at all.

Overall, this is a good book. If you are fascinated by Viking culture or just want to pick up a new thriller, I would recommend giving it a read.
