So good. The banter is the best

This is my favorite emhen book. 10/5 ⭐️

I think I'm not a fan of her writing, especially when it comes to emotion.
FMC is constantly being touted for being "cold", "mean", "emotion-less", yet we see none of that in action.

"People like me aren't broken beyond repair. No ice ever freezes too think to thaw and no thorns ever grow too dense to be cut away."

Just like Beach Read, I started off kind of ambivalent about this book, because the tropey-ness of it all seemed very heavy-handed. Eventually, though, the story sucked me in, and I ended up rooting for Nora the way I always do for Emily Henry's characters. I like that the story was told from the perspective of the "shark," the woman left behind in Hallmark movies and romance books, and humanized that character type. As always, Emily Henry writes a cute romance, but the non-romantic relationships are the real heart and soul of the story; Libby was a really interesting character and I enjoyed the second half of the book so much more due to the dive into her and Nora's past.

This is the fourth book of Emily Henry's that I've read, despite not usually being a big romance reader, and I've enjoyed all of them. I'd suggest giving at least one of them a try, even if you don't consider yourself a fan of romance books, if you're looking for something light-hearted that still has some depth to it.

As with all the Emily Henry books I find the premise interesting and the books disappointing. There is some real fun sparkling dialogue, but that isn't enough to make the book better than average.

What's truly disturbing is how similar this is to an older Jennifer Crusie book called Manhunting. The similarities include city life vs country life, multiple bad dates, pool game scene, skinny dipping scene, a list, saving of a small business etc. All without the childhood trauma discussed over and over ad nauseam. It's a best friend vs a sister. And Crusie's book is infinitely better. Funnier. And, she wrote it first.

Reread review: yup. Still one of my all time fav books.

“How do you do that?”
His brow furrows. “Do what?”
“Say the right thing.”
The corner of his mouth quirks. “No one thinks that.”
“I do.”
His lashes splay across his cheeks as his gaze drops. “Maybe I just say the right thing for you.”
