I enjoyed it more than I anticipated.
The beginning feels very pretentious. I have a hard time relating to the main characters. Possibly in part because the underdog-farm boy schtick feels done to death. But also because the relied on lore over what was happening right in front of them for sooooo long in the book. It was just like agony.

*******
Primarily the thing that ate at me and kept making me put down the book was every time one of the boys whined about not wanting to be near Moiraine Damodred because their stories/lore made Aes Sedai untrustworthy while at the same time she was literally saving their lives over and over again literally right in front of their eyes. I could see the lore/culture/stuff continuing to be prevalent to some degree but the fact that the boys right out shuddered and avoided her for like 3/4th of the book was just SOOOOOO annoying.

At first I was a little lost as to what exactly was happening, but don’t put this book down! You’ll understand in a few chapters, and then you won’t Want to put it down! As far as world-building, I’d put this on the level of Lord of the Rings. The plot was excellent and the characters exciting. Really good book.

Started with the TV series first because I was intimidated by how many books there are. Read first spring thinking that it was this book and was very confused, haha. Prologue was amazing and sucked me in - somehow 800+ pages flew by very quickly.

Readers often talk about how Robert Jordan spends a lot of time describing clothes but somehow, I didn’t find it long-winded or overdone. Love his prose. Also didn’t see some scenes coming despite already knowing the general storyline after watching the TV series. Excited to read more in the rest of the series!
