Fans of Rachel Hawkins' novels will no doubt adore School Spirits, a spin-0ff featuring Izzy Brannick, a cousin to Hex Hall's Sophie Mercer. Those who haven't read one of Hawkins' fast-paced, witty novels will no doubt fall in love after meeting Izzy!

Brannick is more than a last name for the main character of School Spirits, it's a role to fill - and a big one at that. Izzy and the women in her family protect the world from monsters normal people don't even realize exist, living hard, nomadic lives filled with danger and with little time for friends, nevermind boys. Of course, all that changes when Izzy's mother gives her her first solo assignment: rid a high school of the spirit that haunts it, an assignment that requires Izzy to attend a public school and, for the first time, form relationships with her peers.

Izzy's independence is one of her best and worst traits. On one hand, she's a badass and can take care of herself. On the other, there are situations in which admitting some weakness would have been an obvious help. But, of course, this is part of Izzy's journey. It was clear Brannick women are expected to have a fierce sense of independence, but I loved seeing Izzy embrace her weaknesses and ask for help. There aren't very many Brannick's left and I felt Izzy's realization that it was okay to form relationships and ask for help was a valuable lesson for continuing the dying Brannick legacy.

I was amused by Izzy's unique group of friends - who are members of a ghost hunting club - and found their attempts to track down ghosts comical next to that of a true Brannick. I also loved Izzy's protectiveness of the group, who she felt sure would find themselves in more trouble than they could handle. For a girl who has so little experience interacting with kids her own age, she is a surprisingly well-adjusted individual. I liked that about her; I think it made her easier to relate to.

Aaaaand, of course, Hawkins includes a splash of romance, an element that always proves to be absolutely wonderful in her novels. School Spirits is no exception and features a boy quite different from Hex Hall's Archer, but just as swoon-worthy.

I adored School Spirits and can't wait to read more about Izzy! I have a quite some time to wait before the next book releases, so I'll have to comfort myself by rereading Sophie's story in the Hex Hall books!

Rachel Hawkins, why did you have to write this spinoff series? Couldn't you have left off with the masterpiece that was the Hex Hall series? I was so excited to get more of the snarky and exciting writing from Hawkins, like in Hex Hall, but I was vastly disappointed.

School Spirits is the first book in a spin-off series. Rachel Hawkins had previously written the Hex Hall series, a series I’ve always wanted to read but never had a chance to. Fortunately, Disney-Hyperion was so kind to send me an eGalley of the first book in the School Spirits series.

First of all I would like to say that you do not need to read the Hex Hall books before reading School Spirits. I bet School Spirits would be even more fun to read when you've read the previous books by Rachel Hawkins, but I did not feel like I was missing out on anything. In fact, I did not know School Spirits was a spin-off until I started doing my research after reading this book.

School Spirits follows Izzy Brannick who, at only 15, is able to defeat monsters. Pretty badass, huh? It’s tradition for Brannick ladies to hunt the magical evil and that’s exactly what Izzy, her older sister and mom do. Until Izzy’s sister mysteriously disappears on the job.
Her mom decides to give Izzy a break and they move to a new town where Izzy is to attend high school as well. She discovers that this small town isn’t as normal as it seems and she’s determined to prove her mother that’s she a true Brannick. And that all while discovering high school.

Izzy quickly makes new friends at school and she can include me as one of her new friends as well. What a likeable character is she! As are her new friends. Or maybe it is Rachel Hawkins who I really like. Her writing style is so quirky and funny and it makes me really regret not reading Hex Hall when I was a little younger. Because I have to admit that School Spirits is a little bit too bouncy to my liking, but sometimes that is exactly the kind of book I want to read. Perhaps that's a bit contradictory but it's true.

What surprised me about School Spirits was not the witty prose or the likeable characters, but the fact that I was not able to predict the plot. Honestly, I was not able to tell what was going to happen which is a good thing of course. Fun and light books like this generally go hand in hand with predicting storylines but that was definitely not the case with School Spirits.

I really wish I could go back in time and give the Princess Diaries-loving me these books written by Rachel Hawkins. The humor and the writing style slightly reminds me of Meg Cabot, but other than that School Spirits has different things to offer: magic as well as mystery. Although I did perceive this book as ‘fun’ and ‘light’ it also definitely left me on the edge of my seat not knowing what to expect at all. Are you looking for a light read filled with a combination of magic, humor and a hint of suspense than School Spirits is definitely up your alley.

School Spirits was entertaining. It was a light, fun, and cute read. I did enjoy it but I was also pretty disappointed, I mean I really enjoyed Hex Hall and for me this series doesn't seem to be up to par.

The reasons I think this are because I feel like it was too shallow and not deep enough, the issues it dealt with felt like they were easily brushed off. The cute little romance felt exactly that; cute and little. Immature. Young. More for a preteen rather than teenager. But I guess this book is geared towards preteens more than teenagers even. At least it kind of feels like it.

It just wasn't as solid as I had expected it to be but I did still enjoy it and will be carrying on with the series.

Fans and newcomers alike will fall in love with Rachel Hawkins' newest book, School Spirits. The start of a companion series to her New York Times bestselling series Hex Hall, School Spirits stars Izzy Brannick, the youngest Brannick and cousin to Sophie Mercer (our resident Demon). Her mom, her sister, and she are the only surviving Brannicks, and as such are charged with keeping the creepy crawlies at bay. But when Izzy's sister disapeers, her mom decides to take a break from hunting. But in true Hawkins fashion, a break is far from what happens!

I was so excited to find out Hawkins was writing a companion series to Hex Hall. I loved reading about Sophie and the Prodigium, but when I got a look into the Brannicks history in Spell Bound I wanted to learn more about them! Izzy is a great main character to follow. She's witty and strong, but so very awkward. That's probably her most endearing quality right off the bat. She has to learn how to fit into a completely alien situation, and as most of us know, high school is alien even for teens who grew up "normal". But in her awkward actions in the social department, her hunter skills are graceful. She has such potential and I can't wait to see what Hawkins has in store for her.

On top of the great characterization (all the supporting characters have unique personalities and quirks that make them pop from the page), Hawkins always has some of the best dialogue. School Spirits is no different, with Izzy and Co. going back and forth with the witticisms and snark that make their journey so much fun! Of course the best at this is Torin, the "poor" Warlock locked in the Brannick's family mirror. He is a wily character that always has a sharp retort or dry observation to impart on Izzy. I love when books are imbued with humor because it makes the violence/emotions/problems that much easier to read. It is a pull for me, and one of the reasons I will read anything Hawkins writes!

There is a lot going on in this first book that is left unanswered, and instead of that being annoying, it makes me ache for the next book! I want to know what will happen to Dex, where the heck her sister Finley is, what are Torin's motives, and just what kind of "special" is Izzy? Hopefully all will be answered in the coming books! In the mean time, go grab yourself a copy of School Spirits, out today, May 14th (links to buy up above). And while you're at it, grab the entire Hex Hall series (books are down below). Definitely a much needed addition to any supernatural fantasy collection!

I received an eARC of this novel via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

For months I have been highly anticipating the release of School Spirits, the spin-off series to Rachel Hawkins beloved Hex Hall series. You cannot believe how ecstatic I was to get approved by Netgalley! I think I may have let out an inhumane sound – sort of like when Dory is trying to talk whale in Finding Nemo.

Anyways, onto reviewing we go!

Izzy Brannick is your average, teenage monster hunter. Her family has been in the business of hunting beasties for centuries. They are the great Brannicks, women of immense strength and legend. When Izzy’s older sister, Finely disappears, her mother decides to take a break and find a small job in a new town. The local high school has been subject to recent hauntings. Izzy is determined to prove to her mother that she is a good hunter. But as she sets out to investigate, Izzy instead gets tangled into a web of social norms, friends, and a possible love interest that may be hiding a secret.

First, I want to say that I absolutely adored Izzy Brannick! She has a little bit of sass just like her cousin Sophie Mercer. You may remember Izzy from Spell Bound, the last book in the Hex Hall series. Izzy isn’t as sarcastic as Sophie, but I loved her nonetheless. Izzy is strong, smart, incredibly witty, and sassy. She’s also cutely oblivious to social norms and behaviors. Her run-in with boys and what their actions may entail were a mystery to her, an uncertainty. I really liked those small parts because, well….it reminded me of awkward high school days. You remember those days? The ones that consisted trying to guess what a boy meant when he walked you to class or gave you his phone number. Did it mean he liked you? That’s kind of the same vibe that Izzy struggles with Dex.

That sort of atmosphere also made the novel relatable, which I adored. It’s founded on realism and tinged with kickass supernatural aspects.

When it comes to her love interest, Dex, I can’t help but smile. He’s different. There’s quite a mystery surrounding him. When Izzy first meets him, she senses magic. She guesses that he is Prodigium – a magical being such as a warlock, fae, werewolf, ect. I honestly thought so too, but he didn’t seem to know that he was. Dex is quite the character. He’s unique, funny, and charming. He also has dazzling blue eyes – who could not fall for that? Dex’s story isn’t revealed until the very end where I am met with a tantalizing bulldozer. But it made complete sense for the entirety of the novel, which was brilliantly done.

Secondary characters were used entirely in this novel, which is something that I like seeing. Romy, Anderson, Maya, and even Torin (the Warlock trapped in a mirror). I loved Romy and how she stood behind the PMS (Paranormal Management Society) club 110 percent even when the other kids in school treat her differently and like a joke. Then there is Anderson, a reformed jock, who joined because well…I won’t tell you this reason because it’s spoilery and I don’t want to give anything away! Just know that it’s a good reason. And finally, Dex, who will do anything and everything out of the norm. Maya and Torin prove to be valuable when information is concerned. Without them there would be no momentum for the novel. Every single character served a purpose and wasn’t left off to the side and forgotten. If there is something I truly dislike in a novel is discarded characters. Definite brownie points to Rachel Hawkins for this!

The benevolent spirit that haunts the high school is of Mary Evans, a girl who died in a cave a few miles from the school. The mystery and reasoning for the haunting is also revealed at the end. It’s part of that shocking and unexpected twist I mentioned earlier. The ghost is evil and wants revenge for what happened to her and she won’t stop until she succeeds. The few instances where Mary is able to manipulate certain objects and attempt to kill someone is scary to say the least. Let’s just say that I wouldn’t want to be a target of Mary Evan’s anger.

All in all, I adored School Spirits. There was a little bit of everything throughout the novel: romance, action, mystery, surprising twists. I just loved Izzy Brannick and her spunk. Her tone and voice was one of the things that drove this novel. If it wasn’t for a strong female protagonist then it would have flopped. But it didn’t. I highly enjoyed it and loved every piece of dialogue and humor that was woven into the story. Definitely recommend it to all you Hex Hall fans when it hits the shelves later this year in May!

Memorable quotes:

Not even lunch and I’d already nearly killed someone.

I was never going to stop blushing. I was actually going to die of blood loss because there wasn’t any left to pump through my heart. It was all in my face.

I actually felt it was going quite well, and I hadn’t even gotten to the part where I declare you a tiger sent to matriculate among kittens.

This is fun. Weird and disturbing and possibly illegal, but still fun.

School Spirits is a fun story with likable characters that takes place in a well constructed world. Frankly, I would have preferred more monster hunting and less awkwardly navigating the complexities of a social life in high school, but at least the ghost was interesting. The ending felt a little forced.

What a cute read! I'm a huge fan of supernatural hunter type books or TV shows. I grew up on Buffy and watch Supernatural to this day. I'm a huge fan of Teen Wolf and The Vampire Diaries which also have hunter elements in them. It was only natural that School Spirits would appeal to me. I mean look at the cover! It's basically a ginger Buffy.

Izzy aka Isolde was awesome. I really enjoyed her as a character. She's such a strong female lead. She was likeable, strong, brave, witty and all around awesome. She had trouble adjusting into high school life since she hadn't been in a school ever. She was awkward in the most normal social circumstances but she still dove in head first. I loved that. She was witty about it and took it all in stride.

But I have to say, Dex was my favorite. He isn't like all the other boys you see in YA novels. Dex is weird. He has asthma. He dresses oddly. He had an old timey way of speaking. He's just different. And that is part of what Izzy likes about him so much. I also loved the gender role reversal. Usually we see the damsel in distress and the pretty boy swoops in to save the day or something along those lines. But with Izzy and Dex, she's the one that has to kind of protect him and make sure he doesn't get hurt.

I really liked all of the other characters as well. I honestly don't think there was a character I had a problem with. I absolutely loved Torin and can't wait to see what happens to him in the future. Romy and Anderson were great. I liked Romy. I loved Izzy's mom. Maya was fantastic. I loved everyone and that's a rare thing for a book.

The plot was great as well. There are points in it that would go over into more books, even though there is no second novel in the works at this point there are things to elaborate on and finish but there was also a very clear start and finish to the case at hand, much like what would happen in a television show (like Supernatural.) I really really do hope there are more books in the series in the future. I really loved it!

I think the books Rachel Hawkins writes are just becoming a dirty pleasure for me to read. I am not quite sure what it is about them that I like, but I find them totally engrossing.

This one wasn't quite the Hex Hall series, but I still liked it. I felt that the book found its bearings a bit late. The beginning seemed a bit too much fluff.

I found it to be a great quick read that caused me to miss out on sleep.

From the author who wrote the magical Hex Hall series, comes a thrilling, action-packed spinoff! For many years, the Brannicks were a feared family monster fighting group, determined to track down anything unnatural. Isolde Brannick or Izzy is one of these highly trained monster hunters. She just so happens to be the last one besides her mother and a missing sister. When leads dead end, Izzy and her mother must search for a new case until now information surfaces. Finding themselves in Alabama, Izzy accepts a case involving a ghost at a high school. A ghost. How hard could it be? High school on the other hand. Quickly, Izzy befriends a group of teenage ghost fighters, except neither of them has seen a ghost in their life. As the mission becomes more and more complicated, it is up to Izzy to keep everything from spiraling out of control.

I'm normally not a big fan of spinoff series, but School Spirits defiantly has some potential. Although this will be the only book published in the series, I am looking forward to reading some more. Izzy is a completely different main character compared to Sophie from Hawkins' Hex Hall series. Slightly more grounded and less in the dark about, Izzy is a strong and notable character. Her relationship with Dex is cuter than Sophie's and Archer's. Where there's is full of playful insults and jabs, Sophie and Dex simply are perfect for each other.

I wish Hawkins was publishing more in these series, but only time will tell.
