Isn't the brain a fascinating thing - how it can handle the two aspects of language, creating it (speaking & writing) and understanding it (hearing & reading) in completely different ways.
I wasn't really sure about how the story could work with one character unable to "create" language and yet it did. Very, very well!

This was sweet, and I quite liked it. Impressive character and relationship development for less than 50 pages. I definitely would have loved more -- the way they come to communicate so naturally with each other was especially lovely to read, and even more so the fact that this was not their main source of conflict -- but I still found it very satisfying. It's a good reminder that I need to stop avoiding all the shorts I have on my TBR...

This is from 2012, but holds up. It’s a very sweet story about a down on his luck blue collar guy and a mute guitar player (he has severe aphasia) who learn to communicate through other means (not sex, this is very low steam.) It has some “what is the point of being independent if it means you’re alone” commentary, which I prefer to the stubborn bootstraps mentality. Really great.
I read the blurb and the excerpt and was immediately intrigued by the concept.
How can you write a novel where one character doesn’t speak at all and uses body language and hand gestures to communicate due to having aphasia?
Kim Fielding did a really good job, I think. Though told in mostly Travis’ POV, you still get a sense of who Drew is, even though Drew is unable to speak (or write). Fielding described Drew’s emotions quite well without him having to say a word.
Drew, even in the end, is still very much a mystery that neither Travis nor the reader figure out. The unanswered questions do not deter from the overall story.
I do wish that the scenes between Travis and the Stepmother were shortened, or that Drew had gone to Omaha himself. Or even if Travis kicked himself in the ass and sought out Drew because the ending seemed to come very abruptly.
All in all, I really liked this. It’s a quick read (60 pages). If you’re looking for detailed/graphic sex scenes, though, you won’t find it here and I don’t think you’ll really miss it. Pick this up if you want something cute with a side of angst.

This was amazing. This novella is only 62 pages, but it packs such an emotional punch.
Travis is pretty shy and lives a lonely life. He works as a machinist and on his was home he sees a man playing guitar on the steps of what must be his house. He eventually works up the courage to talk to him, and the two strike up a friendship.
Drew has aphasia, which means he can't speak or write. However, Travis understands him just fine and the two's friendship quickly turns romantic.
I wish this was a full length novel as Travis and Drew are so awesome.

I am full of love!!! I think this story had the perfect length, tbh. I love how Drew's problems were both a big deal and not a big deal at all for these two. I'm questioning a bit if Travis would really be able to understand Drew so easily and would have sort of liked seeing him having a bit of trouble sometimes, but nevertheless, this story was amazingly tender and heartwarming!
I would've loved a full novel because it had a ton of potential but I loved the story
This was such a cute little short story! I definitely wish that everything had been a tad more fleshed out, but I had a really fun time reading this.
