It's simplicity makes it a quick read, but the sadly simpler characters make it a grating experience.
Sidney Sheldon's playful romp with political espionage.
Commander Robert Bellamy of US Naval Intelligence is commissioned to find a weather balloon carrying military secrets that's crashed in Switzerland. He also has to find the 10 eye witnesses that saw it and question them. Problem is, they are coming up dead one by one and he's running out of time and patience. You have a Pinky and the Brain type villain, and plenty of US political propaganda that is only missing chants of we're #1.
It's a good one and done read.

Decent thriller with a sci-fi twist. The characters actually have some proper backstory, though they’re barely memorable apart from that one alien woman.

The best thing about Sheldon is; he keep braking the writing rule, "show instead of tell". But he does it in such an awesome manner, this doesn't seem a mistake, but a style. This was my first time to find a novel which discussed the topic of UFO's in mature way. All other writers make it so childish. Another plus point.

I’ve read this book twice now it’s one of my favourites
Meh. A poor attempt at a sci-fi thriller with a bit of a message. Robert Bellamy is a Naval officer, who the NSA assigns the task of tracking down an unknown number of unknown witnesses to a top secret "weather eballoon crash" .. Except that the weather balloon isn't a weather-balloon but a space-ship. This takes him across continents and countries, first to find these witnesses, then to save his own life as the agents of multiple countries try and "terminate" him.
Character development is weak. The love-story angle is unnecessary and looks like it is only there to stuff in all the geography that Bellamy travels. If thrillers are your staple, the "suspense" is predictable. Some of the terminology dropping, grates.
There is a lot of cliche: A Texan who is a rancher, an unhappy Russian girl, Oh and the science-fiction - Aliens are bald, with bulging eyes and big heads.
It's a light read that you can get through in 2-3 hours. And if you go faster and skim through it, you will still not miss much. Not Sheldon's best work.
