A very well written book. I enjoyed reading about both Violette and Virginia. It was a hard book to get through, but the stories of these women are amazing and I’m glad they are being told.

My rating is lower than it probably should be and it's my fault. I am so worn out of reading WWII books and I've kind of sworn them off...but then I hear rave reviews on a book and I think, oh I'll try it...and I do and I feel very "meh" about it. It's my issue of being a mood reader and having read too many WWII books.
Most people will really enjoy this book on resistance fighting women. We follow their lives leading up to the war, the stance and risks they take, the relationships they have and the war they fight and the prisoners they become! I am amazed at the real women who did these things! I've read a nonfiction book about resistance fighters and I have to say that I enjoyed that more. I love to hear what real people did and the real problems they faced. I know the author wrote this as historical fiction and she does share real events and places and people. I just prefer the full nonfiction.
My goal and flexible promise to myself...don't read anymore WWII books. (But if I do...it has to be about an aspect that I haven't read before like The German Wife-I give myself permission to read that.) The end.
If you like WWII, I'm going to guess that you will be inspired by the women in this book!

Continuing my WWII fiction reads, I'm enjoying the genre of taking real women and sharing their stories for a new generation. With two main characters, it was clear their paths would cross and also with the time jumps there was the mystery of who was narrating and who were they with. So much of this book was difficult because of so many young people risking it all and knowing that this was just the unfortunate reality. I recognize that the author had a difficult task of narrating inner thoughts that weren't captured but I do wish more about our characters' awareness of the bigger war narratives could have been described, especially in regards to prison camps. That said, I couldn't put this book down, even when my Kindle's battery was dying, which says a lot about how captivating it was.
Wow!!! This book captured me from the first pages. What an impressive story of 2 women /different circumstances, but a common goal. They faced unimaginable experiences and saw the worst of humankind. Throughout it all, Courage was the word that pulled them through. This needs to be a movie!!! It is so well written

4.5 stars. Listened to the audiobook which isn’t my favorite form of reading but wow. Every time I read a WWII novel I have to constantly remind myself that this was real life.
Initially, I had to keep putting this book down (due to "life") so it was hard to get into the story. But once I did, I was sucked in! I kept stopping to Google more information on these women, fascinated by their story, strength, determination, and will to live, and to help others.
I love HF, and this was another great story that opened my eyes to more brave people who made a difference in the war. Amazing story, amazing research, amazing wriing! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book.
