Not bad. Big concept science-fiction overlaps with comic book tropes... sometimes that works, sometimes not. There are some good moments. Recommended for comic book fans and completionists for Marvel, the Marvel Civil War series, or Neil Gaiman.

I read this over two months ago now, and it didn’t make a strong impression on me at the time, so this review isn’t going to be based on anything really concrete. Just FYI.

I’ve actually had this on my TBR forever, because Neil Gaiman, but the premise never grabbed me enough for me to actually do the (slight) work of picking it up. But the movie is coming out soon-ish, so I figured I’d give it a go. And it was fine! I liked all the backstory and the approach to the narrative that Gaiman took, but I never really warmed to the characters (immortal beings who protect Earth from other beings, that’s pretty much all I remember at this point). Also, John Romita Jr.’s art has never been for me, in anything I’ve seen it in. I don’t find it pleasing aesthetically, and also I don’t like the way all his dudes are muscled rocks with tiny eyes, and all his ladies are voluptuous whisps with skimpy clothing.

I did think the big battle/threat at the end was neat. It was just such a large threat, and it didn’t end the way I thought it would. I also thought the basic story was a good one, so I’m hoping with different visuals and actors playing the characters, I will be much more into the story via film than I was here. All in all, not a waste of time, but not something I will be revisiting in the future.

I could never stand Kirby, and Gaiman is the greatest modern hack writer, but I enjoyed this up until its weak conclusion. The Romita art is far better than that of his father, at times even evoking the great Mobius. It's a good sci fi tale and it does shed some light on one of Kirby's most ignored creations--and one of his few good ones--but it's just not that great (though for Neil, this IS great).

Really fantastic reimagining and connection to the original Eternals, coupled with an uneven and odd execution. Internal consistences issues are pretty apparent and it has a bit of a phoned in feel after about the halfway part. But it really does have some interesting ideas when it isn’t silly. I far prefer the movie version.
