if stacy halls has one fan, it's me

i just find her books so easy to consume, i love the historical aspects, i love the characters she writes and i love the way she builds atmosphere

i read mrs england in autumn, the second half of the book, i sat by the window during a storm and it has been the perfect setting

i worked out the main twist myself before the big reveal, i truly enjoyed piecing the mystery together. especially since ruby is an unreliable narrator, you have to pick up on the clues and secrets throughout the story yourself

as with her other books, i feel the pacing gets a lot quicker in the final third but i wouldn't say it seems overly rushed

i just really enjoyed this read! can't wait for her next book honestly, i will keep coming back to her writing!

I still have questions. I think some ideas were touched upon but then either were never picked up again or not explored fully.

Mrs. England centers around Nurse May, who is a recently trained nurse (aka nanny) who is employed by the England family as she chose to not travel to America with her previous family due to unknown reasons.  From the time Nurse May arrives at the England house things are not what they seem as Mrs. England is strangely withdrawn from her children and everyone around her, and Mr. England, a mill owner, is the one essentially running the household.  Strange things occur which led to everyone's secrets being revealed

Mrs. England
was just an OK book and I think had it been told from Mrs. England's perspective it would have been a significantly better novel.  As Nurse May is young and doesn't know much about the world she does not clue into certain things so the ending feels a bit Scooby Doo where it's like "aha! this is what has been happening the whole time!".  Also, I thought this book was going to be much more gothic than it was and I think that also would have helped set the mood for the book.

It incorporates history with a fictional storyline, creates a sense of mystery to what is happening in the England household as well as going into detail about main characters background.

However the book took a while to reach the climax, it sometimes became slow paced. It almost felt like nothing occurred for the first half of the book, I wish there was more build up.
