This took me almost the whole year to read. Comprehensive, Dr. Fauci does a cameo (!!), learned a lot. The queer community is incredible.

An amazing in depth overview of the queer movement. I really appreciated the detail of the early movement, things I’d never even heard of. It’s truly amazing how far we’ve come.

I also appreciated the reminder that there will be setbacks but if we keep fighting we can win.

Aside from my interest in the topic, I was impressed with the author's writing style. She continually made what could have been dry material very interesting and had it flow well.

A very detailed history of the gay and lesbian rights movement. This is a little light on the trans element of this history but everybody has their own take on LGBTQIA+ history. I like the early parts of queer history which highlights how far we have come since the days when we weren't allowed to exist in the early twentieth century legally. I also enjoyed the coverage of early movement groups like the Mattachine society and the daughters of Billitis. It spends a lot of time with battles in the sixties and Seventies where much progress happened and got to the point of the Marriage Equality of the early 2000s. Very good history.

Update 3/12/24 Reading this reminds me of how far we have come but also how fragile our gains are. A bad Ruling from the Supreme court or a very foreseeable ballot disaster could make people like me illegal again. It is important to read this stuff and understand how bad things have been and could be again if we aren't vigilant.

Compellingly clear and thoroughly readable. It's organized by "struggle", with the stories of movement heroes interwoven. I learned what precipitated the Stonewall Inn actions and Edith Windsor's backstory. I had been a little intimidated by the length, but it's "only" 635 pages, with the rest being notes. A bracing ode to civil rights fighters.
