dark slow-paced

** spoiler alert ** This is my third Stephen King novel, the first two being The Shining and its sequel. This book was not only a horror story, but also extremely violent and gruesome. Also, note to self to check "does the dog die" prior to picking up a book... Also should check "does the parakeet die", apparently. I found the story (especially in the middle) unnecessarily long but the ending was captivating and fast paced.

I think this is one of my favorites by King. At least so far, not quite The Stand, but amazing. I love his longer novels and the character's in this book were great. I highly recommend this one!

Classic slow burn. The characters were well developed and there was actual humour in the story despite the sinister nature.

The atmosphere/ vibes of this book are IMMACULATE. It’s such a perfect representation of a small town in October with just the absolute most ominous feeling all throughout. Leland Gaunt is a fantastic antagonist, and I love how we never truly knew the truth about him. I also really like Alan pangborn as a mc, particularly after reading the dark half. The story is so smart and intricate and really horrific at parts. My only issue is that it certainly dragged a bit too long and could’ve been edited ab 100-200 pages. I also didn’t totally love the ending, but I definitely think it worked for the story.
