Needful Things

Back in Castle Rock, this novel follows many of the residents after a new shop opens on their business road. This could almost serve as a character study (with added supernatural effects) over human greed, paranoia, and rage.

FIVE STARS FOR YOU STEPHEN KING!!!!  hot damn!!  this one's a fucking winner.

Having seen the movie first hurt the book.

Some people grew sick of the constant "person buys things, person does something small but evil to add to the interlocking web of chaos and destruction" but I actually really liked that; I thought it was fun to follow how each little thread happened. The ending was a little sappy though.

I read this book the first time as a teenager and the story stuck with me all these years. I really enjoyed reading it again and hopefully my next book by King will be as much fun as this one.

I think this is one of King’s underrated books. I always enjoy when he writes about small towns from multiple perspectives. This book is a mixture of horror and comedy. Straightforward things about humans willing to do anything to fulfill deepest desires, religion, small town life. Some characters from past King stories reappear.
